The foundation stone of Major Dhyan Chand State Sports University was laid by the Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on January 2, 2022, making it the first State Sports University of Uttar Pradesh. Spread over a large campus at Salawa village in Meerut district, the university is envisioned as a centre of excellence for sports education, training, research and innovation.

Honourable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri Yogi Adityanath has visited the campus twice to review the construction and academic progress and has directed officials to ensure that the project is completed by May 2026.

At present, the university has commenced its first academic programme — Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports (BPES) — and its temporary administrative office is functioning from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture & Technology, Meerut, until the main campus becomes operational.

Expressing his satisfaction over the meeting, Vice Chancellor Maj Gen Deep Ahlawat (Retd.) said,

The interaction with the Honourable Union Sports Minister was extremely encouraging. His positive response and assurance of support will go a long way in strengthening our mission to build a world-class sports university that can contribute meaningfully to India’s sporting and educational ecosystem to enhance the medal tally in olympics and international competitions in time to come.”

Once fully developed, the university is expected to play a pivotal role in producing Olympians,  qualified sports professionals, sports scientists and administrators, while also serving as a national hub for athlete development in line with India’s Olympic aspirations and the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
