Guest Lecture on “Nutritional Requirements of Athletes”

Major Dhyan Chand Sports University, Meerut (Uttar Pradesh), organised an enlightening guest lecture on “Nutritional Requirements of Athletes” at Kailash Prakash Stadium, Meerut, with the objective of creating awareness among students, coaches, faculty members, sports professionals, and young athletes about the vital role of nutrition in enhancing athletic performance and overall health.

The programme commenced with a warm welcome to the distinguished guest through the presentation of a sapling, symbolising respect and the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Thereafter, Dr. Poonam Bhandari, Dean of Student Welfare, formally introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Nirupama Singh, Chairperson, Stuti Charitable Society, Lucknow, and Dietitian at SGPGI, Lucknow. During the introduction, Dr. Bhandari highlighted Dr. Singh’s distinguished academic and professional contributions in the field of sports nutrition.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Dr. Nirupama Singh elaborated on the nutritional requirements of athletes and emphasised that a scientifically planned, balanced diet should be tailored according to an athlete’s sport, age, training intensity, competition schedule, and physiological requirements. She explained that every sport has unique energy demands, making a personalised nutrition plan essential for achieving optimum performance.

She discussed in detail the importance of a nutritious diet, adequate protein intake, vitamins, minerals, proper hydration, and recovery nutrition for maintaining good health and enhancing sports performance. She further explained that consuming the right food at the right time significantly improves endurance, concentration, muscle strength, recovery, and overall athletic performance.

Dr. Singh also highlighted the importance of adequate sleep and proper rest as integral components of an athlete’s training programme. She explained that quality sleep plays a crucial role in physical recovery, mental focus, maintaining energy levels, and improving overall sports performance. She encouraged athletes to follow a disciplined daily routine, remain well-hydrated, and adopt a healthy lifestyle for long-term success.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and athletes ranging from 5 to 20 years of age. Participants actively interacted with the speaker by raising various questions related to sports nutrition and health, which Dr. Singh addressed with scientific explanations and practical guidance.

Emphasising the importance of grassroots-level nutrition awareness, Dr. Singh stated that educating children and young athletes about proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle practices from the early stages of training is essential for developing future champions as well as healthier citizens. She underlined that nutrition education is a key pillar in the holistic development of athletes.

To make the session more engaging and interactive, Dr. Singh posed several questions to the participants on topics related to sports nutrition, balanced diet, hydration, and healthy lifestyle practices. Students and athletes enthusiastically responded, making the session highly interactive, informative, and engaging while strengthening their understanding of the subject.

During the interaction, one participant asked how vegetarian and vegan athletes could fulfil their nutritional requirements without consuming non-vegetarian food. Addressing the query, Dr. Singh explained that vegetarian and vegan athletes can effectively meet their nutritional needs through well-planned diets. She recommended excellent plant-based protein sources such as soy products, pulses, beans, nuts, seeds, oats, tofu, peanut butter, and plant-based protein supplements. She emphasised that a balanced and properly planned vegan diet is fully capable of meeting the protein and energy requirements of athletes.

The lecture was followed by an interactive question-and-answer session, during which students, coaches, and faculty members sought expert guidance on various aspects of sports nutrition. Dr. Singh responded to every question with scientific accuracy and practical insights, making the session highly beneficial and enriching for all participants.

Addressing the gathering, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Maj Gen Deep Ahlawat, VSM (Retd.), Arjuna Awardee, appreciated the keynote lecture and remarked that scientific nutrition forms one of the strongest foundations of an athlete’s success. He stated that every athlete should understand their nutritional requirements based on their sport, age, training intensity, and competition schedule in order to achieve peak performance. He also expressed his sincere gratitude to Dr. Nirupama Singh for sharing her valuable knowledge and expertise with the university fraternity.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the District Sports Officer, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the keynote speaker, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, faculty members, students, and all participants for their valuable contributions in making the event a grand success.

The programme concluded on a patriotic note with the singing of the National Anthem.
